About the Book
Road Allowance Kitten: Broken Promises shares the adventures of the main characters, Rosie and Madeline, and their pet kitten. Their adventure began in Road Allowance Kitten. These books blend the experiences of Métis families who were forcibly removed from their homes in southern Saskatchewan and relocated to an unfamiliar part of the province, where they found so little of what was promised to them. Award-winning children’s author Wilfred Burton skillfully shares this story through the eyes of the children involved. Broken Promises personalizes this trauma and demonstrates that Canada’s relationship with the Métis Nation, while improving, still requires a recognition that many wrongs have not been adequately addressed. Christine John’s vibrant illustrations are the perfect accompaniment to this authentic vignette of a little-known part of Prairie history.
About the Author
Wilfred Burton grew up in the Midnight Lake area of Saskatchewan and for over thirty years taught in La Loche, Regina, and Saskatoon, ranging from kindergarten to the post-secondary levels. Wilfred is currently retired, but spends his time volunteering or doing contract work for various school divisions, tribal councils, and publishers. His love of Métis storytelling, fiddle music, and dance was a gift from his mother, Georgina Nolin that he loves to share with others through his picture books.
