BOUNTIFUL CROP OF BOOKS

Saskatchewan Book Awards volunteers are delighted with the bumper crop of Saskatchewan books so early in the year.

"We ship books to our jurors in two batches.   The first shipment goes out the beginning of August and our final deadline is September 15," explained Executive Director, Joyce Wells.   "The jurors are all out-of-province authors and publishers.   We already have 70 titles for the first mailing.   In 2003 we had 71 titles for the entire year!"

There is an impressive selection of fiction, poetry, children's and young adults' books, plus a surprisingly large number of non-fiction and scholarly entries.   The number of good quality self-published books is also increasing.

"There are more books being entered by the universities and institutes," notes Wells,   "This year we have our first entry from Notre Dame College in Wilcox.   It's also the year for the biennial Prix du livre français, which celebrates Saskatchewan authors writing in French. "

Books are one Saskatchewan crop hail can't touch!
