ANNA PORTER TO BE GUEST SPEAKER FOR 2001 SASKATCHEWAN BOOK AWARDS
The Saskatchewan Book Awards is proud to announce that Anna Porter, CEO and publisher of Key Porter Books, will headline the Saskatchewan Book Awards Gala on November 30, 2001 in Regina.

Jason Hammond of the Saskatchewan Book Awards Board of Directors made the announcement March 12 at the annual general meeting of the Saskatchewan Publishers Group in Saskatoon.

"Writers and readers are aware of the role played by publishers in making the Canadian voice heard across our nation and around the world," said Hammond. "Anna Porter, as head of one of Canada's most successful publishing houses, will bring a unique perspective to the Saskatchewan Book Awards Gala by focussing on the essential part played by publishers in the Canadian book industry."

As well as her work as publisher, Porter has written several novels and a memoir entitled, "The Storyteller: Memory, Secrets, Magic and Lies." Originally from Hungary, Porter has an impressive breadth of knowledge in the publishing industry. She has given speeches throughout Canada about culture and publishing and regularly attends major international book fairs and events.

This will mark the first time in the Book Awards' nine year history that the guest speaker is a publisher. Previous speakers have included well-known writers such as Peter Gzowski, June Callwood, Pierre Berton and Guy Vanderhaeghe.

The Book Awards have become Saskatchewan's premier literary event. There are now three shortlist events throughout the province featuring readings by nominated authors in the weeks leading up to the Gala. The original four awards have grown to twelve. Last year there were over 200 entries. Cash prizes for authors were increased to $1500 and Saskatchewan's first Poet Laureate, Glen Sorestad, was announced at the 2000 Awards Gala.
