Saskatchewan Book Awards Names Finalists
Forty-five Saskatchewan authors and eleven provincial publishers were named as finalists in the eighth annual Saskatchewan Book Awards (SBA). Jurors selected from 84 titles and over 200 entries. The winners will be announced on November 24 at the Book Awards gala at the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts in Regina.

"It was an exhausting but enjoyable task and wonderful to see so much fine work coming out of Saskatchewan," was a typical comment from one of the panel of jurors. "I will be donating the books to the Dalhousie libraries which I know will benefit greatly from having these works in their collections," said William Maes, Head Librarian for Dalhousie University.

Entries this year included a number of works of major importance in today's world such as "Pandora's Picnic Basket: The Potential and Hazards of Genetically Modified Foods," by Alan McHughen, a senior research scientist at the U of S and "The World is Our Witness" by Tom Molloy, chief federal negotiator for the Nisga'a treaty.

"Entries cover everything from popular fiction by Gail Bowen, to the Atlas of Saskatchewan which encompasses an incredible range of information "said Cindy MacKenzie, SBA President. "With 84 different titles, we can't begin to mention them all. People should ask for the Saskatchewan Book Awards Shortlist at their bookstores."

A new sponsor this year is the University of Saskatchewan. President Peter MacKinnon said, "The U of S is honoured to support the Saskatchewan Book Awards as sponsor of the First Peoples Publishing award and the Nonfiction award.

"We are committed to playing an active part in promoting and encouraging the talents of Saskatchewan writers and publishers and are particularly committed to furthering and recognizing the achievements of First Peoples. We have a wealth of expertise in the province and this is very much in evidence here today."

Book fans are invited to hear finalists read at Shortlist Readings in Regina and Saskatoon at Sunday brunches on November 5 and at a dinner hosted by the Public Library in North Battleford on Wednesday, November 8. Shortlist readings will be featured at the U of R Bookstore on Saturday, November 18. The U of S and Luther College, U of R will sponsor readings on both university campuses.

Tickets for the Saskatoon Shortlist brunch are available from Saskatoon bookstores. In Regina call Sherril Johnson 585-9353. For tickets to the November 24 Awards gala in Regina, call Joy Pelling 306-586-5518.

SBA is grateful for funding from the Saskatchewan Arts Board, the City of Regina and Saskatchewan Lotteries.
