Shortlist Readings in North Battleford
On Wednesday, November 8, the North Battleford Public Library will host the 2000 Shortlist Reading Series featuring authors from beyond Regina and Saskatoon who are short-listed for the 2000 Book Awards. The Library is working with district schools to bring the authors to classroom readings, followed by a dinner and readings at the North Battleford Western Development Museum with proceeds to Save the Children. Sponsored by SaskPower, the North Battleford Shortlist Readings will be an all-community event that will showcase Saskatchewan authors in the best possible way.

Guest Speaker
We are pleased to announce that author/columnist, Mark Kingwell will be our guest speaker at the Saskatchewan Book Awards Gala on November 24 at the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts, Regina. Kingwell's book, "Better Living: In Pursuit of Happiness from Plato to Prozac" was one of The Globe and Mail's top ten books for 1998. His most recent book, "The World We Want: Virtue, Vice and the Good Citizen" will be available from Penguin Canada this autumn. With Kingwell's reputation as a controversial cultural
commentator, we are looking forward to some spicy food for thought following the Book Awards banquet.
Poet Laureate to Be Named
The Saskatchewan Book Awards Gala 2000 will herald the establishment of the Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan, the first provincially designated position of its kind in Canada. The Saskatchewan Book Awards and the Saskatchewan Writers Guild have partnered to make the program a reality. A steering committee with representation from SBA and SWG as well as representatives from the Sask Arts Board, The Department of Municipal Government, Culture and Housing and SaskCulture appointed a selection committee with the difficult task of choosing a Poet Laureate from the many fine poets in the province. The first Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan will be announced at the Book Awards Gala November 24. The Poet Laureate is appointed for a two-year term, and although it is an honorary position, the Laureate will be available for a select number of readings through the Saskatchewan Writers Guild. More information on Poet Laureate readings will be made public in the fall.
Remember, the final deadline for receiving books for the 2000 Saskatchewan Book Awards is September 30. Tell your friends!
