SBA NEWS & EVENTSWelcome to the first edition of the the Saskatchewan Book Awards "Bookmarks!" column. Although the Book Awards gala is a once-a-year event, it requires twelve months of planning. We hope this quarterly column will keep you up to date on what's happening. Feel free to use any (or all) of these stories in your own newsletters, publications, web sites, etc. MORE MONEY FOR AUTHORS is the big news for 2000! The Saskatchewan Book Awards is delighted to announce that the cash award to authors will be increased from $1000 to $1500 this year. This increase reflects the growth of the organization, its financial stability and the importance we place on the creative work of Saskatchewan authors. THE GUEST SPEAKER for the gala on November 24 will be Mark Kingwell, noted philosopher, author and cultural critic from the University of Toronto. His writing regularly appears in The Globe and Mail, Saturday Night, Harper's and other magazines and he is a frequent guest panelist on CBC programming. Our web site has a poll where you can vote for future guest speakers. Visit our home page to let your voice be heard! GALA MOVING! As another reflection of the growth of the Saskatchewan Book Awards, we will be moving the Gala from the Hotel Saskatchewan to the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts this year. This move will give us room for growth, reduce parking problems and provide another fitting setting for our highly regarded Awards Gala. THE CALL FOR ENTRIES for Saskatchewan Book Awards 2000 has gone out. Writers and publishers are invited to submit their books. Visit our submission page or call Joyce Wells at (306) 569-4187 for a copy of the full criteria or the call for entries. For more information on any of these stories, please contact Joyce Wells at (306) 569-1585 or director@bookawards.sk.ca. |
