How to Submit a Book - Official Criteria

The 2010 Call for Entries was issued on June 1, 2010. For the entire criteria package please click here.

The deadline for submissions for titles published between September 16, 2009 and July 31, 2010 is Friday, July 31, 2010. Exceptions exist in the Young Adult/Children's Literature, First Peoples' Writing and Publishing, and the Prix du Livre Français award categories, please refer to the official criteria for those awards.

The deadline for titles published after July 31, 2010 is Wednesday, September 15, 2010.

All official criteria for each award category must be met for each submission in that category.

Please note the following criteria changes for 2010:

1) Award for Young Adult Literature/Children's Literature

This award competition now alternates from year to year between titles intended for readers aged 11 and under (Children’s Component) and readers aged 11 to 18 (Young Adult Component). A title may be entered either in the children’s component or in the young adult component, but may not be entered in both.

In 2010, titles for young adults readers (11-18 years) published between September 16, 2008 and September 15, 2010 will be eligible.

For the 2011 competition, titles for children’s readers (aged 11 and under) published between September 16, 2009 and September 15, 2011 will be eligible.

2) First Peoples’ Writing Award

Alternates from year to year between titles intended for readers up to 18 years of age and titles for adult readers.

For the 2010 competition, the First Peoples’ Writing award will target titles for adult readers published between September 16, 2008 and September 15, 2010. In 2011, titles for readers up to age 18 published between September 16, 2009 and September 15, 2011 will be eligible

3) First People’s Publishing Award

In 2010, this award will target titles aimed at 18 years of age and older published between September 16, 2008 and September 15, 2010. In 2011, the First Peoples’ Publishing Award will target 18 year of age and younger published between September 16, 2009 and September 15, 2011.

4) Scholarly Writing Award

Beginning in 2010 translations and critical editions to which the translator or editor has contributed 49 pages or 25,000 words in the form of an introduction, notes and/or commentary will be included in this category.

5) Graphic Novels

Beginning in 2010 the graphic novel format will be included as eligible in all the categories except Poetry and Scholarly.

6) Publishing Awards

Beginning in 2010 a cash award for $2,000 to go toward promotion of the winning book will be presented to the publisher in the First Peoples’ Publishing, the Award for Publishing, and Publishing in Education.

7) ***Readers’ Choice Award is discontinued.

Please note: SBA’s jurors only select a winner in each award category if there is a high-calibre work which merits the award each year.
