First Peoples' Writing Award Criteria
This award is presented to an Indigenous Saskatchewan author or authors for the best book judged on the quality of writing.
Note: This new award, introduced in 2009, alternates from year to year between titles intended for readers up to 18 years of age and titles for adult readers.
Awards
- $2000 to the writer(s). (Subject to item 5 under submissions.)
- Commemorative certificates for the writer(s) and publisher.
- A specially designed seal for display on award winning books.
Eligibility
- Titles must be published between September 16, 2008 and September 15, 2009.
- Authors must have resided in Saskatchewan for the last twelve months, or for four of the last five years. Residency shall be calculated from June 1, 2009. In the event of an author’s death, the title will still be eligible if the death was no more than a year before June 1, 2009
- Titles may have been published anywhere in the world.
- To be eligible, titles must have no less than 48 inside pages (with the exception of children's books), an ISBN number, and be professionally printed and bound.
- Anthologies will be accepted.
- Collected and/or selected works by a single author will be accepted.
- There are no restrictions on the number of authors for title eligibility; in the case of multiple authors, 50% must be Indigenous and from Saskatchewan; the prize will be awarded only to Indigenous writers who meet SBA’s Saskatchewan residency requirements.
- Submissions may be in any Indigenous language used in Saskatchewan or French or English.
- Revised editions are eligible only if the majority of the work is deemed new, excluding a Foreword written by the author or editor. Republished or reprinted books with no new material are not eligible.
- Publications in alternate media such as CD-ROMs, electronic publishing, multi-media publishing, internet-based books, kits, brochures etc. are not eligible in any category.
Submissions
- July 31, 2009 is the deadline for receiving titles published between September 16, 2008 and July 31,2009. The deadline for titles published after July 31 is September 15, 2009.
- For each title submitted to this category include the completed submission form, four copies of the title and a cheque or money order for an administration fee of $20.
- Submissions may be made by the publisher or author.
- Titles may be entered for more than one award.
- If, in the opinion of the judges, no work is of high enough quality, no award will be given.
- There shall be only one award given in this category.
