NEWS RELEASE

October 25, 2007

New authors and favourites take the stage on Saturday, November 3, 2007, when the Saskatchewan Book Awards hosts its annual Regina Brunch & Shortlist Author Readings. The event takes place at the Hotel Saskatchewan Radisson Plaza and begins at 12:00 noon. The highlight of the brunch will be readings by four of this year’s nominees, who have an impressive combined total of eight Saskatchewan Book Awards nominations. Reading at the brunch will be:

Michael TrusslerAccidental Animals, published by Hagios Press (nominated for 2007 Book of the Year and 2007 Regina Book Award)

“[U]nflinching,” Ann Simpson hails of Trussler’s newest work, “yet … able to reveal the magic coiled within the ordinary. Again and again, he enlarges our vision of the world.” Trussler is also winner of two 2006 Saskatchewan Book Awards for Encounters, published by NeWest Press.

Wilfred BurtonFiddle Dancer, co-authored by Anne Patton, illustrated by Sherry Farrell Racette, Michif translation by Normal Fleury, and published by Gabriel Dumont Institute (nominated for 2007 First Book Award, 2007 Children’s Book Award, and 2007 Regina Book Award)

Burton and Patton’s unique children’s tale seeks to capture the importance of preserving Métis culture and the Michif language. Their first book “weaves a childhood story rich in Métis culture and language.”

Joanne WeberThe Pear Orchard, published by Hagios Press (nominated for 2007 First Book Award)

Weber’s work is “an Eden of exquisitely ephemeral yet eternal feminine language that embraces history and the present moment in its moral landscape,” says Susan Andrews Grace.  Weber’s first poetry collection is an “ambitious and original work” that depicts a woman’s struggle to face the reality of her deafness.

Pat KrauseActs of Love: A Memoir, published by Coteau Books (nominated for 2007 Nonfiction Award and 2007 Regina Book Award)

The Times-Colonist Islander hails this work as “an achingly beautiful memoir.”  Krause’s third publication has been described by Denise Chong as “an exploration of life in the face of her husband’s death.”
